Why Sustainability? An African Perspective

🌍Africa, and the world at large, faces increasingly numerous challenges, ranging from environmental dangers to economic problems. There’s water scarcity, and hunger, and poverty, and climate change, and an endless list of other things that reduce the quality of human life.

😥If these problems are left unaddressed, the world as we know it will not last much longer. That’s why the UnitedNations designed SDGs; sustainable development goals.

🚀African startups have been playing their part, and in this post, we’ll examine a few SDGs and some startups that are actively working to achieve them.

Several African startups are working hard to improve access to nutritious food (SDG2)

Pocketfood (500 Global ’24) is a Nigerian kitchen-as-a-service platform designed to meet the nutritional needs of busy professionals. PocketFood was founded in 2022 by Omolara Olarerin with the mission to improve the lunch experience for Africans, particularly in urbanized areas like Lagos.

✅We also have ColdHubs Limited, founded by Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu to address the issue of post-harvest losses in Africa. They provide solar powered walk-in cold rooms designed to store and preserve perishable foods like fruit, vegetables and dietary products. ColdHubs has launched multiple cold rooms across various markets in Nigeria and plans to launch many more.

✅There’s Complete Farmer, a Ghanaian agritech startup making waves in Africa. Founded by Desmond Koney, the startup has successfully connected thousands of farmers across key regions in Ghana, delivering commodities to Asia, Europe, etc. Complete Farmer is promoting sustainable food production by addressing key issues like supply chain inefficiencies and inaccessibility.
